What a guide actually adds
Three things, and they are not the same three everywhere on the site
Machinery, identification, access. The third one is not a matter of taste.
In the Colosseum: the machinery. Without a guide you see an oval of brick with a pit in the middle. With one, the pit becomes a basement full of hoists and trapdoors, the holes in the walls become sockets for iron clamps, and the missing south wall becomes a set of buildings elsewhere in Rome. All of that is invisible unless somebody points at it.
In the Forum: identification. This is the strongest case on the whole site. The Forum is where Rome did its law, religion and politics, and what survives is foundations and column stumps. Unguided, most visitors walk through it in twenty minutes and describe it afterwards as rubble. Guided, it is the most interesting forty minutes of the day.
Underground: access. Not an improvement — permission. The hypogeum is entered accompanied on a defined route with numbers controlled by timed slots, and there is no version of the ticket that lets you walk down alone. If that is where you want to stand, the question is settled before it is asked.

Four situations where a guide is not the answer

- You have been before and read a great deal
If you already know what the Curia is and where the House of the Vestals stood, a group tour will spend half its time on material you have. Buy a bare admission, walk it slowly, and stay until closing.
- You want to go at your own speed

- You only have an hour
